Elementary 5th Grade Manuscript lesson
1 hour and 20 minutes approx time
First we learned all about manuscripts. We watched a wonderful presentation on You tube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuNfdHNTv9o (approx 6 minutes long)
Gold liquid watercolor
Black liquid watercolor
markers or colored pencils
White piece of paper 11×12
1 12 inch white feather ($2.99 or so for 6 at most craft stores)
First initial letters (i did 4 per piece of paper) downloaded all off mine http://www.fromoldbooks.org/ (in the search bar key in “letter” followed by the letter you are looking for. Example-if child’s name begins with “C” key in “letterc”
Step one- Write name on back of big paper- set aside
Step 2- Paint your letter gold
Step 3: Carefully cut around the black border. Set aside and let dry
Step 4. Flip paper VERTICAL. line ruler to edge of paper- draw a mark at the “1” and “11”
Step 5. Flip ruler upside down and do the same on the right side of paper. (Mark the “11” and “1”)
Step 6 using your ruler connect your lines. Add circles in the corners
Step 7 –Paste your letter (LEAVE AT LEAST ONE INCH from border
Step 7- lightly erase your lines
Step 8 – Using gold- paint the border with your paintbrush.
Step 9- Draw 3 lines across. Then lightly erase.
Step 10 Draw 5 medium size “V’s” on each side. (Leave at least ½ inch on sides)
Step 10- Draw smaller “V’s” in between the bigger ones. Add “0’s” to the tips
Step 11- Add more detail.
Step 12- using colored pencils or markers- color your designs.
Step 12 – using your pencil write your name on the top (remember 1st letter in already there. Write some words that describe you or things that you enjoy doing
Step 13- using your quill feather. Dip in ink and trace your letters. YOU MUST DIP after each letter
